Has Martin O’Neill learned transfer lesson?

By: Chris | December 15th, 2008

If Martin O’Neill could describe his managerial ability without resorting to the self-deprecating charm that makes him the darling of fans and the media, he’d say it is “really excellent”. And he’d be right.

But way back in July, I got a tad bit frustrated with O’Neill’s apparent refusal to strengthen his side over the summer. Despite gaping holes in our team, Aston Villa entered the Intertoto Cup having undertaken precious little transfer activity.

I was delighted to eat my words following the signings of Nicky Shorey, Luke Young, Carlos Cuellar, Brad Junior, Brad Senior and James Milner. In other words, I’ve learned my lesson.

But has Martin O’Neill learned his?

Between January 1st and February 2nd 2009, O’Neill has a crucial chance to arm Aston Villa for a very real assault on the Premier League’s fourth spot. That’s right folks – it’s transfer window time again.

Whatever happens between now and Christmas, Villa will go into the transfer window either in fourth or not far off. Despite this, it’s clear that we could do with certain improvements (a couple of strikers, basically) to equip us properly for the fight with Arsenal for a Champions League spot and, at worst, keep us ahead of the chasing pack.

January’s transfer window is tough, and I would hope that Martin will be quicker off the mark than he’s been in any window so far. Frankly, I hope he’s already got one striker all but signed.

Do you think O’Neill’s ready for January? Who do you want to come in?

I don’t think Emile Heskey will be a particularly worthy addition to the team, tbh.
Henrik Larrson would be amazing, and would add an experienced head to the team, but MO’N has steadfastly rebuffed this suggestion, which usually means he is telling the truth.

    Hi James.

The Larsson thing is interesting. My view on that is that he would’ve worked wonders for us if we’d been able to get him during the season he played for Manchester United.

Now I’m not so sure. I think I’d rather take a (slightly) younger player.

I would have Lukas Podolski on my wish list, young, hungry, british (well anglo/saxon), fast, skilled, good vision and not too expensive! He would fit together perfectly with Agbonlahor and Young!

I’m a massive fan of Podolski. I’m not sure I could handle the excitement if we signed him!

Podolski would be a fantastic signing but anyone else think that due to the exchange rate, any new signings might be British based?

Slightly offended by being placed below Spurs, to be honest.

If they sell their soul (not that they have one) then maybe they might be able to outspend us: http://www.offthepost.info/2008/12/welcome-to-naming-rights-lane-home-of-tottenham-hotspur/

But then why would Podolski go there to be managed by Redknapp the Halfwit anyway?

Still, Redknapp will have them in financial ruin in no time. Happy times.

i dont place you below spurs. i was just talking about the cash situation. they normally spend like maniacs for a club of their stature (not much). i do kind of like them though. haha
