The Great Craig Bellamy Dilemma
By: Chris | December 23rd, 2008Eagerly awaiting the transfer window?
Well, Aston Villa already have the wheels in motion – apparently we’re close to signing 17-year-old Dutch defender (seems he’s a centre back or right back) Arsenio Halfuid. Halfuid plays for Feyenoord and his agent, Willie Haatrecht, told Sky Sports that Villa are busting a gut to seal his signature.
But the most intense speculation currently is about a possible move for West Ham United’s Craig Bellamy. That’s pretty controversial, no two ways about it.
Bellamy is none-too-popular in football. His altercation with Mary Poppins, the ‘golf club’ incident and several other sundry run-ins have given him a fully-deserved reputation as a poisonous little cretin.
So do we really want the likes of Craig Bellamy at Aston Villa?
I’m genuinely going to sit on the fence on this one. Standing (sorry sitting, sitting!) at Upton Park on Saturday, it was clear to me that Bellamy is rather a good player. He created almost everything West Ham had to offer, and he was so, so clever in exploiting any gaps in our back four. He’s also got a vicious shot on him. We need a bit of that action.
What’s more, Martin O’Neill got the best out of Bellamy at Celtic, where the Welsh attacker himself admits he had a good time. The question is this: would our harmonious dressing room force Bellamy to pipe down, or would it be rocked by his presence?
Eddie Griffin at Soccerlens thinks the suggested move – Marlon Harewood plus cash for Bellamy – would be a good one all round. If O’Neill wants the Welshman, it would be a good deal for Aston Villa, Craig Bellamy and Marlon Harewood. But I disagree with Eddie’s view that it would be a good deal for West Ham.
Judging by their performance against Villa, a Hammers side without Bellamy would be a bit lifeless. Harewood is not the man upon whom to pin all your hopes and dreams, much as I like him.
Still, I’m not sure Bellamy is the man for Villa either. But I’d rather him at this stage than Jermain Defoe.
Thoughts?

Bellamy shines at West Ham cause his team mates are not up to his level. With Carew, Agbonlahor and Young he would struggle and fade at Villa.
If I were Martin O’Neill I would either try and buy Saviola from Madrid or David Suazo from Inter. Both would come on the cheap and after sitting on the bench for the last 2 years would try to prove themselves again.

Bellamy is good, but he is a misanthrope and a hooligan. If we need a striker, American Landon Donovan is available for cheap and is at least as good as Bellamy. http://nordeckeluchador.blogspot.com/

Donovan is a great shout (as is Suazo) but I’d want Martin to bring in another striker too. We’re in our best position for years, we need to take advantage.
If we signed Donovan and he stuttered even slightly, we could miss our chance. That said, he’d be more than welcome.

This is a non story. The cowardly Daily Mail can’t even attach a reporter’s name to the piece, even though the language seems to suggest that it’s MO’N’s wife who is writing, statements are being made with such outright confidence.
This is just another one of those cases where a hack sees a team has a gap, and a player that would fill that gap seems too good for the club he is at. Put two and two together, and make three.
MO’N is far too shrewd to go for Bellamy. It would disrupt the dressing room to have such a firebrand, and O’Neill does not have history of putting up with conroversial players.

I think if West Ham have any hope of a decent finish this season Bellamy would be a key part. That being said, Villa could find a better striker anyways. Let alone one who isn’t so wild off the pitch.
