Young or Shorey? Who’s gonna sit it out?

By: Martini Extra Dry | August 9th, 2008

Due to UEFA rules, Villa can only play either Luke Young OR Nicky Shorey in the qualifying round against our unpronouncable Icelandic opposition. This is due to players needing to be registered with UEFA by 4th August and only one extra player is allowed to be added to this list after submission.

Martin O’Neill finds himself with a difficult decision to make now, with a gaping hole in both those positions and not wanting to pick a favourite from his two new boys.

Nicky Shorey must be the favourite to get the nod though, with Craig Gardner as potential cover at right-back but, with Bouma injured, no-one to fill in on the left.

If we qualify though, we can then register both Shorey and Young, along with any other new recruits we bring in before the window closes.

Martini, I know this question is a little late, but what do you think of MON’s understated transfer deals? do you like that he’s buying cheap British talent or are you annoyed that inferior teams like Pompey and Sunderland apparently have more transfer pull than AVFC does?

I like it. I think his transfer targets have been fantastic. To me, he is aiming for players who he thinks will add to our TEAM more so than just players who have good solo reputations. That is the kind of football I love; team play. Boring, yeah I know but I love smooth flowing football. That’s why I often enjoy watching Arsenal and Man Utd even tho I don’t like them. I like the way they play, nice passing games.
So I’m thinking (and hoping) that that’s what MON is aiming at by bringing in all these god but not fantastic players. But, as is always the case in football, the only possible way to see if they will work out is to wait and see.
When he signed Ashley Young I said to my brother; that’s a right waste of mony, he’ll do the odd good thing and maybe score 2 or 3 goals but he won’t justify his price. Oh how he made me eat my words! He’s exceptional!
So in short; yeah I like the transfers, but lets wait and see before we get caried away.
