Villa draw another Never-’eard-of-’em
By: Martini Extra Dry | August 30th, 2008
The draw for the UEFA Cup first round has pitted The Villa against the Bulgarian side; PFC Litex Lovech. Here’s a link to their website, but unless you’re Bulgarian it’ll look like Wingdings! Don’t worry, just click on the ‘English’ button to transform it from undecipherable symols.
Litex play in the TBI A Football Group, which is the top flight in Bulgarian domestic football, where they have been for a decade now and last season they finished fourth. The Bulgarian league isn’t hugely known in England but many are familiar with CSKA Sofia, last year’s champions.
As is always said by managers and players alike, the team are not to be underestimated, but Villa are the heavy favourites, picking up odds of around 1/10 to go through to the next round. The first leg is on 18th Sept and the return game on 2nd Oct, and though not yet confirmed it will most likely be played live on Five in the UK, so get the beers in for that one.
Litex wear a lovely shade of orange, but don’t worry, it’s not qite as garish as the Wolves!
Our new signings can be regsitered for this next round, allowing Luke Young, Carlos Cuellar, James Milner and Nicky Shorey all to be considered.
