The Big John Carew Saga
By: Chris | January 15th, 2009It’s been a little while since we saw John Carew in an Aston Villa shirt. His last appearance was against Manchester United at the end of November, and it’s been a bit strange winning without him ever since.
Carew fell foul of Martin O’Neill thanks to a curfew-breaking trip to The Rocket Club, a phallically-monikered skin bar on Birmingham’s Broad Street, on the night before Villa’s opening UEFA Cup group match at home to Ajax.
He learned to his cost that The Rocket Club is an appropriate venue for throwing away £20 after £20 after £20 at my 20th birthday party, but not for a professional footballer on the night before a big game – regardless of how unlikely he may to play in that match.
Carew was openly criticised by O’Neill, but talk of a rift did not come to light. Big John bounced back with a goal at Wigan and the winner at Slavia Prague, and played a part in a few other games before being overcome with his infamous mystery back injury.
Nobody seems to know what’s going on with Carew, but we can only hope his injury is not too serious – and that it is nothing to do with the notorious titty bar incident. I’m sure it’s not.
So with talk of the injury being a nasty and/or unidentifiable one, Villa fans have been concerned about Carew’s contribution this season, with rumours even suggesting that the Big Man won’t play again this term.
What a relief, then, that O’Neill (in his confusing round about way) has expressed his belief that Carew will be back:
“I am no soothsayer but John will definitely be back although I couldn’t tell you a specific date. That would be hard to say.”
Bizarre. Let’s hope he’s right.
