Shorey deal completed
By: Martini Extra Dry | August 7th, 2008
Nicky Shorey has tonight completed his signing from Reading to Aston Villa, for a reported Β£3.5million, solving Villa’s crisis brought about by Bouma’s recent ankle injury. The left-back has been working his way into the England squad in the last year or so and sees this move as a great chance to continue his push for a starting place.
Shorey rejoins his former team-mate, Steve Sidwell, as Villa’s fifth signing of the summer. Martin O’Neill also continues to keep it close to home, by bringing in more English talent. We now have 14 English players in our squad of 23, plus Shaun Maloney making it 15 British players. If the 6+5 rule comes in Villa will be ready.
Shorey will no doubt jump straight into the starting team, thanks to circumstances, for next week’s UEFA Cup qualifying game against our unpronouncable Icelandic opponents. He will also no doubt start all Premiership games up till Bouma’s return, at which time we will have a fantastic competition for the left-back spot.
Watch this space for the imminent arrival of Luke Young over on the opposite flank to Shorey, who should hopefully be completing his deal tomorrow.
