Other Villans on duty
By: Martini Extra Dry | October 12th, 2008
Yesterday’s international action saw no less than 6 Villa players selected for their nation’s sides, 5 starting and one on the bench. None of our boys were on a losing sides as four of them gained convincing victories and the other two at least kept clean sheets.
Starting at the back:
Brad Guzan was on the bench for the USA game at home to Cuba, who his team thrashed 6-1 to keep them top and Cuba rooted to the bottom of the table. USA are running away with the group, having won all four of their games so far.
Our captain, Martin Laursen, was also involved in a home win, beating Malta 3-0. Toulouse striker Soren Larsen bagged a brace and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger scored a penalty in the win. Laursen played the whole game, as did former Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen.
Gareth Barry played half the game for England, click here for more on that game.
Stiliyan Petrov played the full game, gaining an pleasing home draw against Italy. Bulgaria will now hope to start winning some games and fight Republic Of Ireland for second place.
Moustapha Salifou played and scored for Togo in a superb 6-0 win against Swaziland. Arsenal’s Adebayor also hit the net… four times!
Finally big John Carew’s Norway drew 0-0 in Scotland. Both Carew and former Villan Maloney had good chances to score but in the end both teams drew a blank. A second draw in a row for Norway leaves them bottom but one while Scotland move up a place into second.
All in all a decent weekend for Villa stars, more to come on Wednesday.
