Debate time: Is Marlon Harewood good enough?
By: Martini Extra Dry | October 2nd, 2008
He gets a lot of bad press and a lot of stick from many Villa fans but there’s also plenty who love him and think he should be given more of a run in the team. From 2002/2003 to 2004/2005 Marlon had three 20 goal season’s in a row, but since then he has slipped out of favour and is now lucky to get a handful a season.
Last night against Litex Lovech, Martin O’Neill decided we were confortable enough to risk it and put Harewood on from the start. This was his chance to prove he can still score goals and win games. Well, he managed to score a goal, we didn’t win the game though. Villa played well and before their penalty, Litex looked well and truly beatable.
Harewood’s goal was excellent last night, he recieved a headed down ball from a goal kick, took it well and turned, the steamed round the Litex defender ad hit it across the goal into the far corner. But other than that it was a game more about wasted chances for him. As everyone knows, Villa create a lot of chances, even against top four sides, so scoring against Litex Lovech should’ve been easy by comparison. The team had 18 shots, only 5 of which were on target.
It’s not just about last night though, the QPR game saw Marlon very heavily criticised by fans, whereas a year ago fans were singing his name and praising his super-sub abilities.
So what do you think? Is Marlon good enough to get more of a run in the team or should we let Delfouneso have a chance to prove himself? Should we sell Harewood in January and replace him?

The problem, I think, is this; at this point in his development (and he’s still young enough to improve), Harewood is a solid #4 striker – impact sub, very occasional starter – for a club like Villa. Unfortunately, he’s been playing as our #3, a situation that really hasn’t served anyone well.
If he can accept being #4, he’s definitely worth keeping. But if he can’t, Villa should let him go somewhere he can move up the pecking order, see what value we can get in return, and give Delfouneso a run in the spot instead.
And regardless of his future, we need to acquire an actual #3, or we’re going to see a lot more stat lines like today and last Wednesday.
