Be proud… Be very proud
By: Martini Extra Dry | July 7th, 2008Villa have today unveiled the new kits for the 2008-9 season which features our new sponsor; local charity Acorns Children’s Hospice. This new charity deal is the first of it’s kind in Premiership history.
Being ready and willing to produce the fortunes to help the club be successful isn’t a first for a foreign/millionaire purchaser of a football club. But generally it is purely and simply in order to make more money on the back of that success. This however, seems to have much more heart than that and it’s fantastic to be behind a team who are finally injecting a little bit of compassion back into the game that is at risk of being taken over entirely by money.
When Abramovich first arrived at Chelsea there was a honeymoon period where it seemed like he was a good guy who just wanted to watch his team on a Saturday afternoon, winning a game of football. And who can deny the ambition to do the same? But these days, all we seem to see from Abramovich is tantrums and hissy fits.
Well, enter Randy Lerner. The Brooklyn born millionaire is proving to be an excellent owner for Aston Villa. Not only has the team come on leaps and bounds under his ownership and also he always seems to enjoy watching his team perform but now he has done a very honourable thing and given up the revenue of a shirt sponsorhip for a year.
Yeah, yeah, I can hear you cynics out there; “He can afford it”, “It’ a publicity stunt” and blah blah blah. Well maybe it is true, maybe he can afford it and maybe it does get him a lot of free publicity (this article being one example) but, and call me a soppy old sod if you will, I think it’s a lovely gesture.
Randy, you get my backing and Acorns Children’s Hospice, you get my best wishes. Keep up the good work.

I have made a point of not buy the kit for the last few years, because I don’t want to be a billboard for internet gambling. Now I’ll be first in the queue to get the new jersey.
