Villa to face Gillingham in FA Cup
By: Chris | December 10th, 2008Aston Villa’s two possible opponents in the third round of the FA Cup played their second round replay at Edgeley Park last night, with a second half brace from Tottenham Hotspur loanee Andy Barcham sealing Gillingham’s progress against Stockport County.
Gillingham v Aston Villa will be played at Priestfield at 1.30pm on Sunday 4th January, and will be shown live on ITV1 and ITV.com.
The plus side for Villa is that we are, for once, playing a League Two side rather than Manchester United. But to be honest I think this tie will be as tough as a trip to Stockport might have been – even though County are big enough.
I would call it a ‘potential banana skin’, as football parlance would suggest, but we all know that a banana skin is a fully-fledged banana skin whether or not one slips on it, and that a potential banana skin is, in fact, a banana.
So let’s see what’s going on at Priestfield, courtesy of BBC Sport:
- Midfielder Adam Miller is at war with the fans
- Gillingham FC is profitable(!)
- They’re fighting for a play-off spot
Well done Gillingham. Though I hear your ground is the worst on the planet.

So all’s normal down here then……
Never judge a book by it’s cover, never judge a club by it’s ground…..
Will you fill your allocation now it’s on TV?

@ Flagman – I think we’ll probably just about fill it, we normally only get one FA Cup game a season.
Certainly not taking this one for granted, Gillingham have been a slippery customer for plenty of clubs in the Cup in recent years.
What do Gills fans think of the draw? Were you hoping for bigger or smaller, do you think you’ll cause an upset?

As a Gills fan I’m really looking forward to this tie. We’ve had quite a few big name clubs come our way thanks to the FA Cup through the years – Chelsea (twice), Arsenal, etc and we’ve given them a good game. We were definitely hoping for a big club tie…would’ve preferred away, but more than happy to be at home.
With regards to our ground, I’m not sure its the worst ground. The away end isn’t that great, but then again why would it be.
