The History of Aston Villa
By: DJ Cuts | April 20th, 2007Just getting into the stride of this blogging business. Anyway, I thought I should put up a little bit about the history of Villa. However I don’t think I could do as good a job as whats on wikipedia, so here’s the link.

Hey, welcome to The Offside!
I’m the blogger for the MLS’ Kansas City Wizards, although I also follow the game across the pond; I must be forward with you and admit my favorite EPL team is Liverpool FC… sorry!
Anyway, I had a few quick questions about the MLS in England and I think given the recent Angel transfer it may be most appropriate to ask a Villa fan: How is American football perceived in England, and is there the opinion that the MLS will be anything more than a 2nd-rate retirement league? What kind of press does the MLS get? Do you think there’s any hope of MLS getting respect in Europe?
Secondly, tell any friends you have who root for other clubs (if you can call them your friends I suppose) to hop aboard The Offside and expand our EPL coverage! When I first joined up, there were only 3 other MLS teams covered (RBNY, DC United, LA Galaxy), so there could be a large number of EPL teams (or Championship, etc.) covered very quickly. It’d be great to see more English teams represented!
Welcome, once again, to our little corner of the football/soccer world!

Welcome!
I look forward to reading your posts! I’ve been trying to keep an eye out on Villa’s results now that you guys have John Carew (I was sad to see him leave Lyon, so I hope he succeeds in the EPL).

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments. Apologies for the dealy in replying but I don’t get much of a chance to get on the internet at weekends.
Michael >> To answer your questions, the MLS is viewed in England as a developing league and that football (sorry, soccer, i will never get used to that)in USA is not taken seriously beyond a youth game with American football, baseball and hockey the staple sports diet of the adult American. However with the recent move of Beckham to MLS and more recently Angel it does appear that the MLS is more serious now. I’m afraid that when you say “2nd-rate retirement league” that a lot of people do see it that way, me too but I am more inclined to think that that will slowly become not the case with many American players in the EPL and English players heading to th MLS.
The press you are getting in the UK is getting more and more with at least 1 story a day in most papers running with MLS in one context or another. I think it will be a long time before MLS is fully respected here but i think eventually it will. The common school of thought being that an average striker in the EPL can be a goal monster in the MLS as the standard of tyhe game is not as high.
I hope that in future there will be some competition between european and American teams, that would be interesting.
>>Inara, thanks, John Carew does appear to be a quality player and I am glad he has joined us and hopefully he will stay longer than he has at previous teams. I also hope that the long ball game we have been playing recently just to hoof the ball up to the big man gets replaced with some attractive passing football.
