Football in The Midlands
By: DJ Cuts | April 20th, 2007
Now most Villa fans reading this will be telling me to shut up, they know all this. However as this is mostly an MLS site I thought the guy’s in the states would like a bit of a background to football (Soccer) in the Midlands.
The Midlands has many football teams, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Walsall, West Bromwich Albion , Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester, Stoke and Nottingham Forrest to name a few and also Derby County, which is a short train journey away from Birmingham and is the city from where the term “local Derby” derives. Walking through the streets of Birmingham you will see people wearing the shirts of these teams, but mainly Villa, Blues (Birmingham City) and a smattering of West Brom.

NOTE: There are many, many more teams from the abundance of different leagues in the Midlands. These are just the more well known teams. Apologies if I missed any.
Of course, there is the usual plethora of glory supporters with their Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal shirts, but you will get that in many cities around the world, I’m sure they’d be happy to swap them for Aston Villa shirts should the Villa once again top the league and start winning in Europe.
These fans have a healthy, mostly friendly, but often, unfortunately, unfriendly rivalry especially between Blues (Birmingham City) and the Villa.
I also would like to say that I have no problem with any other supporters, I like the friendly banter and always wish the Midlands teams well in their endeavours. I certainly wouldn’t want to fight someone because of their allegiance, but I can’t say I enjoy it when they beat us ![]()

Hi Peter
I would’t say hate as that is an ugly word, but unfortunatley there does appear to be a contingent that do. However, the main rivalry is between Villa and Blues, similar to Newcastle and Sunderland, Liverpool and Everton and so on.

One big rivalry you missed out is between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, when these two sides face each other it is know as “The Black Country derby” just like when Aston Villa and Birmingham City face each other it is know as “The Second City derby”. There is also quite a lot of heat between Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion as they used to be the most bitterest of rivals years ago, and when any midlands team face the Wolves or Stoke there is always a lot of heat, as nobody really likes the those two teams.
