Young Villans seal England U21 victory

England’s U21 side last night beat Portugal U21 2-0, thanks to goals from the Villa contingent; James Milner and Gabriel Agbonlahor. Both the Villans performed impressively to help send Stuart Pearce’s young lions into the play-offs for next year’s Championship.

Both these players will also be keen on displaying these talents to senior side manager, Fabio Capello, and earning call ups into the squad for the road to South Africa. With displays like they put on last night, they can’t be ignored for too much longer, particularly with the way the senior side are under-performing in recent times.

England U21 lined up with just Agbon up front, backed up by a five man midfield that was far from lacking in attacking intent. Agbon’s performance made him many’s man of the match, desite being subbed for Frazier Cambell with 20 minutes to go. The recent Spurs loan capture also impressed with similar style of play to Gabby; dazzling pace, good ball skills and intelligent forward runs.

Milner slotted home a questionably deserved penalty just before half-time to give England the lead and Gabby doubled the lead 20 minutes into the second half with a neat through ball from West Ham’s Mark Noble. Gabby got on the end of the ball and, despite pressure from a Portugese defender and their keeper, slotted home.

Now it’s time for us to turn our eyes to the senior team and lets hope Gareth Barry can continue the Villa contribution tonight.
