Welcome to Villa Park, Sidders
By: Martini Extra Dry | July 9th, 2008Hold on to your hats, and maybe take a seat too because this could come as a bit of a surprise; Aston Villa have signed a player! That’s right a player is coming IN to Villa Park. Steve Sidwell has agreed, subject to a medical, to move up the M40 from Chelsea.
Yeah OK, I know, Curtis Davies has come in, but he was already there in a fashion. Whereas all the other goings on at Villa have been the exits of Olof Mellberg to Juventus, Patrik Berger to Sparta Prague, Luke Moore going up the road to West Brom, Carson returning to Liverpool, Thomas Sorensen released, two of the second team players departing for Europe and the imminence of Barry’s departure.
With the stories surrounding Frank Lampard’s possible exit from Chelsea, it is a little surprising that Big Phil has let a central midfielder leave and thin his numbers, but today Villa have come to an agreement for Steve Sidwell to come to the Midlands.
I doubt Villa could’ve attracted a player much better than Sidwell, to come in and attempt to fill the gap that Barry is leaving behind, so this is great news for all Villans. Hopefully he will gel well with Reo-Coker in the middle of the park, presumably taking an attacking role to compliment Reo-Coker’s more defensive postioning, where he did so well last season.
