Villa disappoint in FA Cup – Merseyside next up
By: Chris | January 26th, 2009I know little about Aston Villa’s goalless draw with Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, and I have no desire to learn any more. There simply is no excuse for not beating teams in divisions below. I will not be attending the replay, thereby missing my first home game – cup matches and a friendly included – for nearly four years.
There are four reasons for me deciding not to travel from London to support my team when Doncaster come to town: Leicester City, Litex Lovech, Queens Park Rangers and MSK Zilina. Even in defeat, I never regret attending a league game. But the extra cost, holiday taken from work and miles driven for inept performances against teams we should easily beat have finally worn me down.
With that disappointing result swept subtly under the carpet, I’ll move onto the subject of the fifth round draw, which took place early yesterday evening.
Should we, by some miracle, knock out Doncaster, Villa will face a tough away trip to Merseyside. Everton host Liverpool in the replay having been pegged back to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
By round five, one expects to have tough draws in the FA Cup. You don’t play teams worse than you all the way to Wembley. I’m comfortable, therefore, with having a very difficult trip if we progress from our replay – but anyone who says Villa are lucky should look at this draw (and Saturday’s match, and about 15 others this season) and kindly STFU.
