The Barry Situation
By: irish_steve | May 2nd, 2008Sorry for not writing in ages. For the last month there has been rumors circulating in the newspapers about a possible Liverpool bid for our captain. While both clubs have downplayed the situation during the last few weeks it seems strange to me that 2 days after Liverpool get knocked out of the champion’s league that they make public their bid for Barry. Martin O’Neill has responded angrily noting that Barry was not a player who would break contracts lightly and saying that the player himself wanted to wait until the season was over before discussing his future. The deal according to O’Neill is a cash+player(s) deal. Scott Carson and Riise have been listed as possible candidates. Personally I don’t believe we need Riise since Bouma is a perfectly capable left back and Barry has been playing in midfield for most of the season. I doubt Liverpool will be willing to give up a player like Xabi Alonso who plays in the same position. We have 2 massive games coming up tomorrow and next Sunday and stand a great chance of qualifying for Europe. What do you guys think about the Barry situation? Do you think there is any deal that could see Barry leaving but would benefit Villa for next season? I would love to hear from fellow Villa fans as well as Liverpool fans.

Liverpool fan here.
Near as I can tell, it is a god move for the Reds – they need attacking quality in the middle and out left, and seems Barry can take that on.

I don’t see where Barry will fit in to the team. We have 4 fantastic central midfielders in Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Mascherano and Lucas and 3 of them are twice the player Barry is. We need out and out wingers to help support Torres . And maybe a couple of full backs as Riise, Abeloa and Aurelio are not good enough. The likes of Evra for United and Sagna for Arsenal get up and down the wing so quick, its like having 2 extra wingers.

i dont believe it is truly a great deal for villa, they dont need the money as they are quoted saying they are getting 40mil this summer, the only good part is getting to keep carson, which i believe they would buy him in the summer anyways, and i dont know y liver would want him when like someone said, they have 4 great midies. i dont believe a trade will take place.

Very few players on the Liverpool teamsheet could adequately replace Barry at Villa – and if they did they wouldn’t be part of the deal. Scott Carson is overvalued at £10m, and would definitely not be worth losing Barry for.

Rafa is driving O’Neill crazy this week. Hopefully he can keep it together and get us into Europe next season. Preview coming soon.
