New Captain

By: Martini Extra Dry | July 6th, 2008

With Barry looking out of the picture, who do you think should be the new Villa captain in his wake?

Martin Laursen is probably the strongest candidate for the captaincy next season, thanks to his consistent excellence in the Villa backline ever since he returned from injury over a year ago. Laursen is a strong central defender, with loads of experience including playing in the Champions League and the World Cup.

Other candidates include; Ashley Young, who, though still young, was ouststanding for us last season; John Carew, who is a huge presence on any pitch; Stiliyan Petrov, who is finally starting to fit in with Villa and the Premiership or the second most likely after Laursen; Nigel Reo-Coker, who has been one of those sometimes little-noticed but massively influential holding midfielders for Villa since arrived from the Hammers.

Who do you reckon Villa fans? Who should wear the armband?

Barry should keep it and captain from Liverpool. Sort of like telecommuting.

I think our problem last year was that there wasn’t a big enough character on the pitch to kick the rest of the team up the arse when they were underperforming (Fulham and Sunderland at home for example). With so few players coming in (again!) the next captain isn’t as immediately obvious as it should be.
