FA Cup 3rd Round draw
By: Chris | November 30th, 2008The last ball out of the hat at Soho Square in this afternoon’s FA Cup 3rd Round draw was the mighty number 2, the famous third round ball of Aston Villa.
Amazingly, it wasn’t preceded by Manchester United, but by ‘Gillingham or Stockport County‘.
Given our record of drawing United in the last decade, this is a pretty good draw for Villa. We could really do with a healthy cup run, so avoiding Sky’s favourite four teams is a real bonus for us. The likes of Everton, Newcastle and Spurs were also drawn elsewhere and we were left with a tie we should deal with fairly easily.
Mark Stimson’s Gillingham are floating around just below the play-off spots in League Two, and held Stockport to a 0-0 draw in their second round match at Priestfield yesterday. County, managed these days by Jim Gannon, are in a similar position in the division about the Gills.
The two will play their replay at Edgeley Park on 9th December.
Ultimately, it’s a match we should win regardless of which team we face – but I’d much rather have drawn them at home.
