Competitive football beckons
By: Martini Extra Dry | July 18th, 2008
Tomorrow at 7pm sees Aston Villa’s return to competitive football, with the Intertoto Cup first leg against Odense BK of Denmark. In a competition for a cup that looks more like a beer tap than a trophy!
And Barry has conveniently side-stepped the whole will-he-won’t-he-play drama by conveniently injuring his foot on his return to training on Wednesday.
Martin O’Neill has travelled to Denmark with a squad light on numbers, that doesn’t contain last season’s captain, but does contain yesterday’s injury doubt Craig Gardner.
Villa are still depserate for defenders but we do have Laursen and Gardner back, who have missed recent friendlies. A right-back is still top of the list of priorities for the recruitment drive as we don’t have a single one at the club, just utility players to slot in there.
Regardless though, Villa go into the match as clear favourites to win across the two legs against Odense and should see their way into the UEFA Cup this upcoming season. The game is live on Setanta Sports, so I for one will be watching our tactics and style of play with both a keen eye and high expectations. Hopefully I will enjoy watching this season’s Villa half as much as I enjoyed last season’s.
What’s the predictions for the game? Who will come out on top and what will the score be?
