Already?
By: Johnny on the Spot | October 19th, 2007Earlier this week, Randy Lerner was interviewed and said he would not stop Martin O’Neill from taking the helm of England.
Today, Marting O’Neill responded to speculation, which has him as the favorite to land the most un-coveted job outside of Brittany’s sponsor.
O’Neill made his intentions quite clear, by deflecting the question and supporting Steve McClaren, rather than ruling himself out of the job.
It now seems that the question is not “if” but “when”. So much for the 5-year plan.
Quotes by O’Neill from the interview:
“I will say my piece. I am very uncomfortable trying to answer a question here about England.”
“My chairman has mentioned something. He was trying to answer a question that was being hypothetical about the England situation.”
“More importantly, I think England were really unlucky against Russia. They have been playing great in the matches and my own view, for what it is worth, is that they will still qualify. I think that Russia will not find the game in Israel easy. I should not be saying any more. All of this is wildly unfair.”
“It is unfair to talk about this with people having already made their minds up about the group – and it is not over.
“Steve McClaren is absolutely right in that the group is decided over 12 games and if England qualify, which I still think they have a great chance of doing, will they not deserve to qualify? Yes, I think they will.”
“I think it is unfair to ask me the question and I am going to take a real stance. That is the end of my answer.”
O’Neill had claimed on television at the start of the season that the England situation was “dead in the water”. But, ahead of Saturday’s home game with Manchester United, the Irishman said: “If I said that a few weeks ago, I can’t remember. I can’t remember what happened yesterday. I’m not saying any more. That’s it.”
