Villa storm to a 6-0 win
By: Martini Extra Dry | July 10th, 2008Currently in Switzerland on pre-season tour, Villa have opened with a rampaging goals feast against FC Wil 1900.
Martin O’Neill fielded a team that included many players that he clearly wants to see perform, prior to the start of the Premiership season. The starting line-up was as follows:
GK: Stuart Taylor
Def: Craig Gardner, Zat Knight, Martin Laursen, Nathan Baker
Mid: Ashley Young, Moustapha Salifou, Wayne Routledge, Stiliyan Petrov
Att: Marlon Harewood, John Carew
Used Subs: Gabriel Agbonlahor, Sam Williams, Elliott Parish, Nathan Delfouneso, Nigel Reo-Coker, Zoltan Stieber, Marc Albrighton, Isiah Osbourne, Shaun Maloney
Goals: Harewood 2, Carew, Delfouneso, Maloney, Routledge
Beating FC Wil 1900 isn’t exactly something to be massively proud of but it is promising to see some of the youngsters playing so well together and also some of them getting on the scoresheet. Delfouneso, who was given a squad number last season but never made an appearance, came on and scored with his first ever senior team touch for Villa. Also, promising was Wayne Routledge making only his second first team appearance and socring a cool goal. This coming on the same day that he was harshly criticised by in the press by Crystal Palace chairman, Simon Jordan, totally unprovoked.

Shaun Maloney, who has been subject to a press merry-go-round of will-he-won’t-he leave the Villa this summer, also got amongst the goals, with one of his trademark free-kicks.

The other three came from where we want to see them coming from, our two big strikers; Marlon Harewood and John Carew. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come from our big front line.
