VILLA 2-1 Olbiyun: Villa keep up chase for fourth

By: Chris | January 11th, 2009

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t convincing, but it was a win. And for me, this season has now become about points, points and points. Nothing else.

Aston Villa disposed of West Bromwich Albion with no little difficulty at Villa Park yesterday and in truth it should have been much more comfortable. I thought our first half performance was quite decent – though far from our best – and we looked quite dangerous.

The 2-0 scoreline didn’t flatter us at all, as we were the better team by a distance during the first 45.

The first goal was thoroughly deserved (don’t listen to Match of the Day’s bullshit, we had something like 8 or 9 shots on target in the first half), and came from a brilliant pass by record signing James Milner.

Albion cleared off their line twice in quick succession and the ball found itself flying towards Milner on the edge of the box. Instead of attempting a hacked volley, Milner spotted Gareth Barry out wide and played a majestic first time pass, allowing Barry to cross superbly for Davies to stoop and head in off Scott Carson’s post.

It was former Villa man Carson himself who scored our second in hilarious style. Gabriel Agbonlahor bombed in on the Albion goal with no support from his colleagues, and stuck in a speculative low shot from close range.

It was weak and directly straight at the goalkeeper, but fortunately he ‘did a Carson’ and fumbled the ball into his net. Bizarre. Brilliant.

I’ll pretend the second half didn’t happen. Villa should have gone on to win comfortably but we just never emerged from the tunnel. Albion pulled a goal back through a well-taken James Morrison finish, but to say they deserved a point would be a little strong.

Elsewhere, Arsenal scraped a lucky win at home to Bolton Wanderers. Bugger.

i felt a bit bad for Carson at first. did he turn down a chance to stay with the Villa, or did they just let him go?

We just let him go. He simply isn’t good enough, he cost us countless points last season. It was nice of him to pay two of those back yesterday.

I do feel sorry for him, he seems a nice enough kid. But he’s a shocking goalkeeper.

it’s good to see Villa keep their CL momentum going, no screw-ups against lesser opposition like last year this time (Fulham, Boro, etc.). good to see Laursen back as well. when’s Bouma coming back?

No word on Bouma yet except that he’s doing well. I guess we’ll hear about him taking on more training in the next few weeks.

i always thought Carson would mature into a world class keeper .. the games he played against Juve in the Champions League in 2005 were fantastic ..
