Sunderland Disapointment

Villa continued their downward spiral over the weekend with a second disappointing defeat in a row this time against Sunderland. Villa have not won a game in a month and playing in Europe next season is up in the air. The thing that was most upsetting was the fact that Sunderland hadn’t won an away game all season up to that point. Luckily, Portsmouth lost over the weekend and Everton only could manage a draw against West Ham so Villa are now 8 points back of 5th place.
On the pitch Villa again looked lackluster and didn’t create many clear cut chances during the game. Harewood’s opportunity in the 2nd half was Villa’s best and I would have put money on them taking 3 points if Harewood had scored. But it just wasn’t to be. Martin O’Neill summed up the last couple of weeks by saying “Since we drew with Arsenal a fortnight ago we have been really disappointing.” All Villa fans can agree with that statement. It is up to the manager now to earn his money and help the team to bounce back in the last 7 games of the season.
The international break during midweek may help the Villa players to forget their recent bad form. Many of the first team squad are currently away on international duty and hopefully everyone can come back injury free and ready to fight for a place in Europe next season. Thanks to Villa’s recent dip in form, Blackburn and Man City have caught Villa and now all 3 clubs are on 49 points. It doesn’t get any easier for Villa with a visit to the champions Manchester United this weekend but most Villa fans will be wanting if nothing else a good performance on the pitch.
