Friedel red rescinded

By: Ryan | March 25th, 2009

I must apologise for the lack of any kind of report on the Liverpool match, but I couldn’t even bare to think about it for a few days. Five goals, two penalties, and an unfair red card, all going in the wrong direction for my liking. We must take this humiliation to realise we still have a long way to go to really break into the champions league. Playing Reo-Coker in right back against a strong Liverpool team on form its only inevitable he is going to make a few mistakes, and those mistakes led to two goals.

The good news is that Friedel’s red has now been rescinded, so he is able to play against Manchester United, and if the Liverpool match is anything to go by, we are going to need all the help we can get.

Oh and I must say congratulations to Brad Guzan for his debut Premiership match, he did well between the posts during the time he was on the pitch, it’s just a shame his debut was under these circumstances.

Rightly so that it was rescinded. I can understand that in the heat of the battle the referee thought it should be a straight-red. But after watching it on TV you could tell Friedel tried to make himself small so as not to foul him. Also, Torres leaned into Friedel before he fell.

Friedel’s Red Card was correct according to the Laws of the Game. Which is why the referees want an explanation, if the FA is telling them to just let people who cheat to prevent goal scoring opportunities off the hook now.

Whether or not he made himself small, there was definite contact. If the red is rescinded it can only be because the foul did not prevent an ‘obvious goal scoring opportunity’, in that there was another defender between Torres and the goal, or that the ball was moving away from goal when the foul occurred.

brad obviously didn’t mean to bring torres down, and there was nothing malicious in the foul, but it certainly looked a foul.
