A Very Lucky Point
By: irish_steve | January 23rd, 2008Villa got their luckiest point of the season against Liverpool on Monday night. Except for a crazy 5 minute spell they were totally outclassed and didn’t really deserve to be on the same pitch as their counterparts. Villa’s first half display was the worst I’ve seen all season and they were very lucky to be only loosing 1 nil at halftime. The midfield was totally overrun by Gerrard and co while Agbonlahor only touched the ball on 1 or 2 occasions leaving him clearly frustrated. Villa were caught offside on countless occasions in the first half which stopped them from gaining any rhythm.
The second half started just like the first with Liverpool attacking from all angles but Villa held firm. Harewood came on in the 66th minute and within 3 minutes he had almost set up a goal and then he scored one, a spectacular bicycle kick which made the scores level. 3 minutes after Harewoods goal Villa were ahead, a complete fluke, which resulted in Aurelio scoring an own goal. Even the staunchest Villa fan would have to admit that they didn’t deserve to be level with Liverpool never mind being ahead. A late Crouch goal gave Liverpool a fully deserved equalizer.
The Liverpool fans showed their discontent for their American owners throughout the game singing about their heritage and displaying many anti Hicks + Gillette banners. Wouldn’t the Liverpool fans love an American owner like Randy Lerner who keeps his nose out of the clubs affairs and lets the manager and players get on with their jobs? All in all, a very lucky point for Villa who have Blackburn in the league on Saturday which will be very interesting.

Since when has good defending not been a part of the game? Yes Liverpool had alot of possession but they did very little with it creating few chances. When Harewood came on Villa had their only real attacking spell of the game and scored two goals - that is the aim of the game I believe! Playing keepball and doing nothing with it does not make you a superior team - just a niaive one

Rubbish report, as the away team playing one of the country’s top four teams I think your being very very negative about Monday’s game. ‘Didn’t really deserve to be on the same pitch’ - twaddle. Villa were not at their best but again we were dangerous from set pieces and with an understrength side (Barry and Carson were out remember) we got a very good result. Reo Coker was awesome in midfield tracking back and breaking up Liverpool attacks. If Liverpool played that well how come they didn’t thrash us? Also how many shots on target did they have? Not many. I will say Young looked especially poor in the first half and Harewood made the difference when he came on. But when you play big sides you have to ride your luck and play on the counter attack, we did that. Maybe your report would be a fair one if you didn’t make it so dramatically biased towards the scousers.
