Sunderland Preview

Martin O’Neill’s decision to apply to enter the Intertoto Cup for next season may turn out to be a very important decision. He applied for the competition in February and after Spurs winning the Carling Cup and the “Big 4” exiting the FA Cup, the competition for a European place for next season is very tight. It is looking increasingly likely that only 1 team will gain a UEFA Cup spot based on their league position this season. There are many twists and turns still left in the season but the Intertoto Cup may turn out to be Villa’s only path into Europe for next season.

Last week’s games against Boro and Portsmouth were described as “massive” by Martin O’Neill but both performances lacked passion and were unconvincing. Gaining only 1 point from a possible 6 was very damaging and a Villa will look to turn it around against Sunderland tomorrow. The Boro performance was poor by Villa’s standards but there was a big improvement against Portsmouth who had David James to thank after a string over excellent saves.

I believe if Villa play like they did against Portsmouth they should have no problem beating Sunderland who haven’t scored in the league in over a month. Mellberg is suspended after his red card against Portsmouth so Gardener should fill in at right back. Gabby has yet to score in 2008 but was called up again to the England squad and scoring against the Black Cats would do his England chances no harm. Villa are now 7 points back of 5th place and another slip-up against a team that is fighting for Premiership survival is unthinkable.

Prediction 2-0 Villa
(Villa Fans in the US can catch this game on Setanta Sports kick off 10am Central Time)

Why is it that we keep choking at the sight of European places? One thing MO’N definately needs to buy in summer is a proper midfield general, who won’t let the other players give less that one hundred per cent. Gareth Barry is inspirational as a example setter - but we need a gurrier, like (wishful thinking) Genarro Gattuso.
